Iflix Arrives In Pakistan
Iflix has gone live in Pakistan, following a multi-year drama licensing deal with local broadcaster Hum TV unveiled last month.
The SVOD service launched in Pakistan January 9, without a local telco partner at present. Subscriptions after a 30-day free trial cost PKR300 (US$2.9) a month or PKR2880 (US$28) a year.
Local operations are managed by GM Farees Shah, who took up the role in March 2016.
Pakistan becomes Iflix’s third market in South Asia, following November’s launch in the Maldives and entry into Sri Lanka in August.
The company, looking to expand in emerging markets after an initial rollout in Southeast Asia, is steering clear of India due to costs and competition.
In Pakistan, its closest rival is Netflix, a pricier option with tiers ranging from US$7.99-11.99 (PKR825-1,237) per month. In Q4 last year, telco incumbent PTCL announced a deal to support and promote Netflix's services in Pakistan.
