CatchPlay On-Demand Goes Direct In Singapore

Taiwan’s CatchPlay, one of the latest new entrants rolling out US and Asian movies on-demand, has unveiled a direct-to-consumer offering in Singapore.

CatchPlay’s VOD suite is also available in Indonesia, via triple-play operator Telkom Indonesia (a direct-to-consumer service should launch by the end of the year), as well as its home market, Taiwan.

The latest launch follows CatchPlay’s Singapore debut earlier this year, tying up with cable and telecoms group StarHub to provide SVOD and TVOD add-ons to StarHub TV as well as SVOD service StarHub Go.

Pricing for CatchPlay’s own SVOD tier will be slightly higher than its SVOD offering via StarHub, at S$14.90 (US$10.6) versus S$12.90 (US$9.2) per month. During a special promotional period however, both are available at the lower S$12.90 price point.

Singapore, a market with some of the highest levels of pay-TV and broadband penetration (fixed line and mobile) in Asia, is a relatively uncrowded arena for SVOD services oriented around US fare.

The main services at present are: Netflix, which offers integrated billing through both Singtel and StarHub, as well as its own direct to consumer service; StarHub Go, which also has complimentary access to HBO Go; and Toggle Prime, an SVOD offering from incumbent broadcaster Mediacorp, which includes on-demand services from Disney.

More competition is emerging around Asian and sports content however, spearheaded by StarHub Go, which offers both, and Viu, a freemium app from Hong Kong’s PCCW focused on Asian entertainment, including early-window drama from Korea.

Hooq meanwhile, an emerging markets SVOD play backed by Singtel, Warner Bros and Sony, is also working on a local offering.

CatchPlay’s new Singapore service is launching with 400-500 mainly US movies, with plans to build the catalog and add more Asian content over time.

The catalog comprises earlier-window movies in a premium TVOD tier, as well as older movies accessed via SVOD as well as a cheaper TVOD price point.

SVOD subs also get one complimentary TVOD movie per month in Singapore and Indonesia, and two per month in Taiwan, in a move to provide fresher content than SVOD rivals.

In a move to attract potential subs, CatchPlay a film distributor and co-producer of Asian and Hollywood movies, also curates a free selection of films for its VOD services each month.
