Richard Fox To Lead Warner Bros. China Expansion

Burbank, CA – Richard Fox, who has served as Executive Vice President, Warner Bros. since 1992, will be relocating to Beijing in early 2016 to spearhead the expansion of the Studio’s activities in China, as well as oversee Warner Bros.’ interest in Flagship Entertainment, a Chinese language film co-production joint venture with China Media Capital (CMC) founded this summer. This announcement was made today by Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros.

“China represents incredible opportunities for Warner Bros. across a variety of businesses,” said Tsujihara. “With his unique background and unmatched experience, Richard will work with Chinese talent and the Studio’s partners to provide premium entertainment content for this fast-growing, dynamic market. Richard’s international expertise and acumen are widely recognized and will help us move forward in China in a meaningful way.”

Fox will work with divisional leaders in the United States, as well as current Warner Bros. executives in China to coordinate Warner Bros.’ business activities in the country and explore new opportunities and partnerships. He will also coordinate Warner Bros.’ 49 percent interest in the Flagship Entertainment joint venture, which will have its first release as early as 2016. As part of his Flagship responsibilities, Fox will work with Warner Bros. executives to distribute Flagship titles outside of China.

In September, Warner Bros. and China Media Capital announced Flagship Entertainment as a groundbreaking collaboration to deepen the cultural exchange between the two countries. Combining the expertise of Hollywood’s largest studio with China’s preeminent investment and operational platform dedicated to media and entertainment, Flagship Entertainment will develop and produce a slate of Chinese-language films, including global tentpoles, for distribution around the world, including China.

Warner Bros. is already active in a number of business ventures in China, including SVOD (as a partner in Tencent’s Hollywood VIP), TV licensing (“The Big Bang Theory” is very successful on SOHU.com), various consumer products initiatives (including the DC Comics stores throughout mainland China), and videogames (Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s “Tom & Jerry” was downloaded more than 4 million times in its first two weeks of release in July 2015). Warner Bros. also releases select Studio films in China, including “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” “Jupiter Ascending,” “San Andreas” and “Pan” this year.

“Whether it’s in Burbank or Beijing, Warner Bros. has a longstanding reputation as being an excellent business and creative partner,” said Fox. “I’m honored that I will be furthering this tradition and extending the Studio’s legacy through our work in China as well as on the Flagship titles.”

Fox has served as Executive Vice President, International for the last 23 years, working closely with senior management to develop opportunities emerging from the company’s international growth. He has spent his entire professional career at Warner Bros., having joined the company in 1975 as a management trainee working in Australia and Japan. He has lived in various countries overseas and held a number of posts in the international theatrical business while ascending the ranks to his current position.
