Endemol Shine UK Creates New Production Company
London - Endemol Shine UK today announced the creation of a new production company, Sidney Street with MasterChef Creative Director Karen Ross.
Sidney Street Productions will specialise in producing food, factual and lifestyle formats, mirroring the creative strengths Ross has demonstrated in over a decade at the helm of MasterChef in the UK.
MasterChef Executive Editor David Ambler, who has worked alongside Ross on the show for the past eight years, will oversee all versions of the format from the New Year from within Shine TV.
Ross launched a re-versioned MasterChef in 2005 originally as Series Producer, steering it from its original early evening BBC Two slot (as MasterChef Goes Large) to a returning prime time hit for BBC One with three successful further iterations.
As Creative Director, Ross has launched and overseen eight series of BAFTA-winning MasterChef:The Professionals, ten Celebrity MasterChef series and three of MasterChef Junior. The 11th series of MasterChef, transmitted earlier this year on BBC One was the most watched to date.*1
In this time, Ross has also developed and launched shows including The Box with James Martin for BBC One, The Chef’s Protege with Tom Kitchen, Theo Randall and Michel Roux Jr for BBC Two and Mary Berry’s Absolute Favourites and the forthcoming Mary Berry’s Foolproof Recipes, also for BBC Two.
Karen Ross said: “Working on MasterChef for the last twelve years has been a privilege, and though I will always feel very attached to it I have decided that now is the right time for a new adventure. The biggest joy of making MasterChef has been working with all the talented teams, judges and contestants whose passion and dedication makes MasterChef what it is - and will continue to be.”
“I’m delighted to be launching Sidney Street Productions with the support and backing of Endemol Shine. With a strong skill set in food programmes and competitions the vision for Sidney Street Productions is to deliver high quality, populist programming with storytelling at its heart. I’m hugely excited to take on this challenge to develop and bring new formats to broadcast partners and look forward to working on new and exciting projects that lay ahead,” she continued.
Richard Johnston, CEO Endemol Shine UK said: “Karen is a brilliant creative producer. That MasterChef is enjoying some its best ratings after 12 years is a testimony to her drive, dedication and eye for detail. She leaves the show on a real high, in the excellent hands of her long time collaborator David and we are delighted at Endemol Shine to launch the next phase of her story with her.”
Before MasterChef, Ross worked as Executive Producer across the Shine Features department's output and came from a career in observational-documentary making and factual entertainment at MTV, Granada, Endemol, the BBC and Talkback before moving to Shine in 2004.
Ross takes up the role of Managing Director, Sidney Street Productions in January 2016.
